The Canadian webshop platform Shopify will from now on ban webshops that violate consumer rules and will also oblige webshops to state contact details. It is easy to start your own online store via Shopify. According to the ACM, European consumer authorities received many complaints about webshops hosted at Shopify.
This involved, among other things, fake offers, unclear conditions for returning and not mentioning contact details. After consultation with European consumer organizations, Shopify will ban webshops that do not comply with consumer rules if the European consumer authorities request this. The platform will also inform webshops about European consumer rules and mandatory fields will be added in the model websites for contact details of the webshop.
"Shopify gave the webshops freedom in what was on the website. The standard models also did not take into account the conditions that webshops must meet, such as stating the contact details of the webshop. Thanks to Shopify's commitments, thousands of webshops are now better for consumers. Shopify will also respond faster when malicious web shops cause consumer damage," says Edwin van Houten, director of Consumers at ACM.
